The last week was very busy. I’ll have several posts to fill you in. This is the first, patient and gentle readers. Saturday evening we (Steve, Marita, and I) were in the Opera „der Freischütz“ by Carl Maria von Weber. This is an important work not only for the history of music and Opera, but also for the development of the liberal arts concept of “romantic” in Europe and Germany. Before the evening performance we were in Pirna to have tea or a green Berlin beer (a Weisse mit Schuss). Then we drove to Rathen, where the opera took place in an open air theatre carved into the side of a massive cliff, a wonderful setting for such a romantic opera. We parked the car, took the ferry across the Elbe River, walked to a little restaurant where we took break, then walked 15 minutes to the theatre. It’s too bad that you were not with us…

Yes, it is a normal pils with Waldmeister - a green herbal schnapps - in it. It tastes very good, though I don't go in for Schnapps. You can also drink the beer with a shot of cherry in it; then it is cherry red.
Wow, that sounds like a great experience. I love outdoor theaters.
When you say you were "in" the opera are you saying that you visited the opera, or that you were a performer? :)
Yes, it is too bad I could not join you. Maybe next time?
I was in the audience. You have spotted "German interference" in my English. In German I would say "Ich war in der Oper" meaning in English I attended the opera performance.
Yes, next time, when you visit me...
Yummy :)
Not only the food in the Saxon Switzerland is delicious... I epecially enjoyed the view all over the region at Fortress Königstein.
Just great!
